Whether you’re for or against it, sometimes the mercy rule in high school basketball is a saving grace.

At least that’s what it was for Brockton High School in Montana when they were down 59-0 at halftime. That’s correct, a short-handed high school girls’ basketball team was completely shutout in the first half.

Their opponent, Froid-Medicine Lake, had three three players that are at least 6 feet tall.

Brockton coach Terrence Johnson told the Great Falls Tribune he usually has nine or 10 girls available, but due to several reasons, only suited up five Friday against the much taller and more experienced Froid-Medicine Lake team. Brockton’s roster included an eighth-grader.

With the lead that great, the mercy rule took effect at the start of the second half, forcing the game clock to run continuously.

Froid-Medicine Lake coach Lance Brekke said he felt bad for the Brockton players and he doesn’t want to see something like that happen again.

The good news, though, is that Johnson said his team holds no ill feelings toward their opponents.

Now that’s good sportsmanship on both sides!
