After weeks of negotiating, the Sacramento Kings and head coach Mike Brown agreed on a multi-year extension on May 31st.

Brown, who was entering the final guaranteed year of his original deal with the Kings, has inked a three-year, $30 million deal that will keep him under contract through the 2026-27 season.

It was a well-deserved deal for Brown, the 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year and lone Sacramento head coach with a playoff appearance since the start of the 2006-07 season, and one that brought the 54-year-old’s salary into the same range as coaches around the league like Detroit’s Monty Williams and Phoenix’s Mike Budenholzer.

Sacramento formally announced the extension in a statement released on Wednesday, which included quotes from Brown and general manager Monte McNair.

“I love being in Sacramento, and I’m excited for this next chapter,” said Sacramento Kings Head Coach Mike Brown. “I appreciate Vivek and Monte for their continued support, and I also want to thank my coaching staff and the players for their incredibly hard work and commitment to our team. I look forward to working together to accomplish our goals.”

“Mike has done a tremendous job leading our team and this extension is well-deserved,” said Sacramento Kings General Manager Monte McNair. “His commitment to success is second to none, and I look forward to building on the foundation he’s helped establish in Sacramento.”

Over his 10 seasons as a head coach, Brown has compiled a regular-season record of 441-286 (.607) and tallied 50 wins in postseason play. Among head coaches who have coached at least 500 career regular season games, Brown holds the ninth-highest winning percentage in NBA history. In two seasons with Sacramento, he has posted a 94-70 record during the regular season, good for the fourth-best regular-season win percentage in franchise history (.573). Brown’s 94 wins since the 2022-23 season ranks eighth among all head coaches in the NBA in that time.

Brown was named the unanimous 2023 NBA Coach of the Year, earning the distinction for the second time in his career and becoming the first head coach in NBA history to win the award unanimously. He is just the 11th coach to receive Coach of the Year honors multiple times during their career since the award’s inception in 1962-63. Brown picked up his 400th career regular-season victory at Golden 1 Center against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 13, 2023. He was the 54th coach in league history to reach the 400-win mark.
