The number 11 holds a special place in the Sabonis family, and that number will be back on the floor in Sacramento for the 2024-25 season.

Through a statement released by the Sacramento Kings on Friday, All-NBA center Domantas Sabonis announced he will be changing his number from 10 to 11 in honor of his father, Hall of Fame center Arvydas Sabonis.

The number 11 hasn’t been worn by a Kings player since 1990 after the franchise retired the uniform in honor of Hall of Fame guard Bob Davies.

“My siblings and I are so proud of our father and everything he accomplished throughout his legendary NBA career,” said Bob Davies’ daughter Camy Davies Keck in a statement issued by the Kings.

“He was a great influence on our family as well as many young aspiring athletes. He was definitely a man of true character. Given the Sabonis family’s special connection to number 11, we thought it was fitting to share our dad’s number with Domantas and wish him much success. We are thankful to the Kings organization and fans for their continued support.”

Sabonis, who wore number 11 during his time with the Indiana Pacers (2017-22), will don the number of his father, a Hall of Fame big that played 23 years of professional basketball, including seven in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers.

“The number 11 holds a special place in mine and my family’s lives, having worn it throughout my career in honor of my father,” Sabonis said of the switch. “I’m incredibly thankful to the Davies family for sharing number 11 with me and I look forward to building on the legacy of all those who wore it before me.”

More on Domantas Sabonis

It was a memorable 2023-24 season for Sabonis, who secured his second-straight All-NBA Third Team honor.

Over 82 games, Sabonis averaged 19.4 points, 13.7 rebounds (1st in NBA), and 8.2 assists (6th in NBA) per game on 59 percent shooting from the field. The 27-year-old led the league in double-doubles (77) and triple-doubles (26) and clinched his second-straight rebounding title.

Along with leading the league in rebounds, rebounds per game, double-doubles, and triple-doubles, Sabonis’ 673 assists (a career-high) placed him fourth in the NBA, only behind Tyrese Haliburton, Luka Doncic, and Jokic.

Sabonis also finished fourth in win shares (12.6), with only Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexader, and Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of him.

Posting 19-13-8 is a rare feat for NBA players. Sabonis’ 2023-24 season made him just the second player in league history to post those numbers or better, joining Wilt Chamberlain (1967-68) as the only other person to do so.

Since being acquired by Sacramento in 2022, Sabonis has been a force for the Kings, averaging 19.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 7.6 assists over 176 games. Sabonis has already jumped into the top ten on the Sacramento era (1985-present) rebounding leaderboard, coming in at tenth with 2,278 rebounds.

When is the next NBA off-season date of interest?
