Following weeks of build-up and some negotiations through media reporting, Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown has inked a multi-year extension that will keep him under contract through the 2026-27 season.

The Athletic’s Sam Amick joined The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross on Thursday morning to share his thoughts on Brown’s extension, give his take on Sixth Man of the Year runner-up Malik Monk’s free agency, and much more.

Plus: Sam dives into the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching search following the news that UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley has emerged as the top choice after weeks of speculation that JJ Redick would be the pick.

Dan Hurley emerges as the Los Angeles Lakers’ top choice for head coach

  • It seemed as if the Lakers were closing in on hiring JJ Redick, but it appears UConn head coach Dan Hurley is the new top choice in Los Angeles
  • “It seems like Dan is the priority.”
  • How would Hurley be different than past college coaches who have made the jump from the NCAA to the NBA?
  • Could the pivot from Redick to Hurley mean that LeBron James is considering leaving the Lakers?
  • Sam says Los Angeles expects LeBron to return but that this coaching hire could last past the end of his career
  • Will the Lakers be aggressive in free agency and the trade market to capitalize on James’ final season(s)?
  • “I think they’re going to go star shopping again… They know that this window is incredibly small at this point.”

Mike Brown’s extension & Malik Monk’s free agency

  • Kings head coach Mike Brown inks his extension with Sacramento
  • Why was the process so dramatic from a media standpoint?
  • Was there any risk that this extension wasn’t going to happen?
  • Sam says there was concern that the deal wouldn’t happen before the upcoming season begins
  • “It is no small thing to have a winning record in Sacramento.”
  • Will Malik Monk return to the Kings?
  • “I don’t think he’s just waiting in the wings to take whatever the Kings want to offer.”
