According to Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Sacramento’s star point guard De’Aaron Fox ‘has decided not to sign an extension this year.’
The news shouldn’t come as a shock, as Fox would become available for a supermax extension next offseason if he were to make an All-NBA team. With two years remaining on his current deal, there’s little reason for Fox to accept an extension currently.
According to the report, his decision to wait is “in part because he wants to see how the roster takes shape for the long-haul.”
The Kings, armed with the No. 13 pick and pressure to keep up in the West, want to upgrade their roster this week. A deeper look at options, the De’Aaron Fox factor that looms, and why they’re being aggressive, at @TheAthletic (w/ @anthonyVslater)https://t.co/NNJkje5JnJ

Earlier in the 2023-24 season, De’Aaron Fox turned down a two-year, $105-million extension, assumedly for similar reasons. If he makes All-NBA, significantly more money becomes available to him. If he doesn’t, a similar deal to the one currently on the table should still exist. The potential reward greatly outweighs the risks for the 26-year-old.
It’ll be interesting to monitor how general manager Monte McNair improves the roster this offseason and if Fox can perform well enough in 65+ games to earn All-NBA honors and, therefore, supermax extension eligibility.
When is the next NBA off-season date of interest for De’Aaron Fox?
The NBA Draft is now a two-night event.
Wednesday, June 26th, will act as the first night of the 2024 NBA Draft, where the Sacramento Kings will make their first-round selection (13th). The second round of the draft will be held on Thursday, June 27th, where the Kings will use its 45th overall pick.
Sacramento hasn’t had a first-round pick since 2022, when it selected Iowa product Keegan Murray with the fourth overall pick.
