Alex Karaban hopes to help change the Kings’ culture

Alex Karaban arrives in Sacramento with something few rookies can match: a championship résumé.

The newest Kings forward spent four seasons at UConn, helping the Huskies capture back-to-back national championships while becoming one of the most decorated players in program history.

After being acquired by Sacramento on draft night, Karaban now hopes the winning habits that defined his college career will translate to the NBA.

Speaking with Sactown Sports’ Jason Ross, Karaban said the reality of becoming an NBA player is finally beginning to sink in.

“It’s sunk in a little bit now after wearing the jersey and just being in the facility. It’s been a blessing. I’m super excited to be a King and can’t wait to see where my career takes me.”

Alex Karaban’s path to UConn almost looked much different. Academics were a major priority for his family, forcing head coach Dan Hurley and the Huskies coaching staff to adjust their recruiting approach.

After an initial visit focused almost entirely on basketball, Karaban told Hurley they needed to emphasize academics to earn his mother’s approval. The response was immediate.

“They sent a van to my house, and it was strictly an 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. academic visit. It got the job done and allowed me to commit.”

That decision helped launch one of the most successful careers in UConn history. Alex Karaban became the program’s all-time leader in three-pointers while setting school records for games played, games started, minutes and victories.

Despite the accolades, Karaban credits Hurley for preparing him for the NBA both on and off the floor.

“He’s extremely honest with you. He’s never going to sugarcoat whether you’re doing something good or bad. He’s going to be my mentor. He’s someone I’m always going to look up to.”

Now in Sacramento, Karaban believes the leadership and championship experience he gained at UConn can help establish a winning culture with the Kings.

“I’ve seen every scenario at UConn through the wins, the losses, the championships. I know how hard it is to win. Those winning characteristics and what you’re supposed to do on a daily basis can easily be carried over to the NBA and help change the culture.”

The East Coast native has already noticed similarities between the fan bases in Connecticut and Sacramento.

“The fans are super passionate. Part of the reason why I loved UConn so much was the fans. That’s going to be the same thing with the Kings. You want to play hard, and you want to win for the city.”

As for his rookie season, Alex Karaban isn’t focused on statistics or a specific position. Instead, he’s embracing whatever role Sacramento asks him to play.

“I just want to make an impact. Offensively, defensively, and really just continue to change the culture and be myself through it all.”
