My Favorite ARCO Moment: Carmichael Dave

Over the next two weeks, Sports 1140 KHTK will be sharing some stories from a variety of personalities that have experienced Sacramento Kings basketball at ARCO Arena.

After a 33-year run–28 years as the home of the Kings–ARCO will be demolished in the coming months to make way for a new California Northstate University medical school and teaching hospital.

• What is your favorite ARCO Arena moment?

My favorite ARCO moment, by far, was opening night after the team staved off relocation to Seattle. 
Yes, I know the Bibby shot against the Lakers is probably the go-to, but that night was a different kind of championship (and we actually won the game).

The emotions were off the charts. 

• What will you miss most about ARCO Arena?

The noise. The new arena is a piece of art, but the old barn was different.

And those wood floors when everyone stomped their feet! I can’t wait until this team makes the playoffs someday to see just how consistently loud it can get, but ARCO was a PROBLEM for opposing teams. 

• HBO’s “Winning Time” chronicles the rise of Lakers basketball in the 1980s. Which era of Kings basketball would you choose to see re-created on TV or film?

We talked about this on the show. It would be “Losing Time”, and it would be on Fubo or Pluto or something. 

Seriously, I think you could do it all:
– The craziness of how the team arrived, the original barn, where 10,000 plus sounded like 50…..
– You have real actual drama with the horrible Bobby Hurley and Ricky Berry tragedies. Jerry Reynolds fainting. Etc. 
– Then the Maloof years. Webber, J-Will, Adelman. Tommy Lee Jones as Geoff Petrie. 
– Then relocation and everything that went with it. 
– Then all the drama between the team staying and now. 

If you think about it, there’s PLENTY of material for 3-4 seasons worth. My guess is it will get done someday, and then shortly before launch, it’ll be shelved.
