Bob Myers to step down as Warriors GM & President

After building one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history, Golden State Warriors president and general manager Bob Myers announced on Tuesday that he will be stepping down from his position.

Myers, 48, won four championships with the Warriors as an executive during his 12-year tenure with the organization.

The Warriors became a powerhouse under Myers, thanks to the executive’s ability to acquire talent, including the draft selections of Harrison Barnes, Draymond Green, Kevon Looney, and Jordan Poole, and signees Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, head coach Steve Kerr, and many other impact moves.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Myers turned down a new deal with Golden State that would have made him one of the highest-paid executives in the sport.

“This wasn’t about money,” Myers said Tuesday of his decision to walk away. “I’ve made plenty of money. I got offered plenty of money.”

Myers elaborated on his decision to leave the Warriors, stating that he doesn’t feel he can give the full amount of effort needed to do the job.

“This is tough. This is hard. The bottom line is this job, the one I’m in, requires complete engagement one-thousand percent,” Myers said on Tuesday. “And if you can’t do it, you shouldn’t do it. So that’s the answer to the question of why. I can’t do that to our players, Joe [Lacob], I can’t do it to myself.”

While it is currently unknown who will step up and replace Myers at the helm of Golden State’s basketball operations, eyes have shifted to former NBA talent and current Warriors vice president Mike Dunleavy Jr. as a potential replacement.

“He’s really good. He’d be fantastic if that’s the choice,” Myers said of Dunleavy.

What’s next for the Golden State Warriors? Will Dunleavy or whoever goes on to replace Myers turn the page on the dynasty and look to get younger and shed payroll? Or will this group again run it back with the Steph Curry-Klay Thompson-Draymond Green core?

It’s going to be a busy summer in the Bay.
