Preseason basketball lets teams evaluate their training camp invites and decide who deserves one of their final roster spots. After seeing him throughout training camp and the preseason, the Sacramento Kings elected to convert Leaky Black to a two-way contract, the team announced Thursday.

Sacramento has played four preseason games with one remaining, and Black has appeared in three.

  • Preseason Game 1 vs. Lakers: Did Not Play – Coach’s Decision
  • Preseason Game 2 @ Lakers: 11 minutes, 4 points,  1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal on 2/2 FG
  • Preseason Game 3 @ Warriors: 17 minutes, 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals on 3/4 FG, 3/3 3P
  • Preseason Game 4 vs. Trail Blazers: 32 minutes, 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal on 2/6 FG, 2/5 3P, 4/4 FT

Black made the most of his limited preseason opportunities, including knocking down five of his eight three-point attempts. His size and versatility gave Sacramento another wing option as he competed for the team’s final two-way spot.

Black got the start in game four amid unique circumstances, with Zach LaVine, Domantas Sabonis, Malik Monk, Dylan Cardwell, Maxime Raynaud, Ben Simmons, Darius Acuff Jr., and De’Andre Hunter all sidelined for various reasons.

The Kings have one preseason game remaining, facing the Spurs in San Antonio on Friday. Black’s conversion fills Sacramento’s final two-way spot alongside Jonathan Mogbo and Adam Flagler.

Undrafted out of North Carolina in the 2023 NBA Draft, Rechon Black — whose nickname “Leaky” comes from a variation of his middle name, Malik — spent his rookie season with the Charlotte Hornets. He played 284 minutes across 26 appearances, including three starts, while on a two-way deal.

Black spent the next two seasons with the Capital City Go-Go, the Washington Wizards’ G League affiliate. In his second year with Capital City, he averaged 10.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 46% from the field and 36% from three over 35.4 minutes per game.

The Wizards rewarded Black with a two-way contract in late February, and he appeared in 15 NBA games for Washington to close the season.

That gave Black 41 games of NBA experience between Charlotte and Washington before arriving in Sacramento. He is still trying to establish himself as a consistent NBA contributor, but the Kings will have a chance to further evaluate and develop him within their system.

He’ll have the chance to keep proving himself in Stockton and Sacramento after general manager Scott Perry and the Kings decided he was worth their final two-way spot as an intriguing, versatile forward.
