Nique Clifford reveals biggest focus for Year 2 with Sacramento

Nique Clifford has already experienced the whirlwind that comes with making the jump from college basketball to the NBA.

Now, as the Sacramento Kings’ wing enters his second season, he has a much clearer idea of what it takes to stick in the league.

Clifford joined Sactown Sports’ The Matt and Kayla Show during Kings Media Day and reflected on everything he learned as a rookie while outlining what he wants to improve in Year 2.

“It’s crazy how fast it flew by,” Clifford said. “Just being here in my second year, I’m truly blessed and just thankful to be healthy and going into my second year.”

Clifford appeared in 75 games during his rookie season, starting 28 while averaging 8.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 0.9 steals in 25.1 minutes per game. He shot 41.8% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.

The numbers only tell part of the story. Nique Clifford’s role evolved throughout his rookie campaign, and he believes consistency will be the biggest key to taking another step forward.

“For me, I think just learning a lot, trying to study film, being in the weight room, getting a little bigger, stronger, making sure my body’s able to withstand 82 games, and just the consistency,” Clifford said. “I worked on my all-around game this offseason, and I just want to be more consistent as a player.”

That consistency starts well before game night, according to Clifford.

“I think it’s just your approach every single day when you step in the gym,” he said. “Your mindset, how you approach every day of practice. That’s where it starts.”

Finding his role was another major adjustment for Clifford as a rookie. Playing alongside established veterans meant learning when to be aggressive and when to make the smaller plays that help a team win.

“I approached it as just coming in to be unselfish, do all the little things, and early on, it helped me be successful,” Clifford said. “Over the course of the season, my role grew.”

Defense could be the biggest avenue for Clifford to establish that consistency. He wants to become a legitimate multi-position defender and embrace the identity new head coach Doug Christie is building in Sacramento.

“I want to be a great defender. I want to be a guy that can defend multiple positions,” Clifford said. “I’m excited to just take on the challenges.”

With another offseason of development behind him, Clifford enters Year 2 with a clearer understanding of his role, and a specific goal of becoming someone the Kings can rely on every night.
