Should Sacramento sign Jonathan Mogbo to a standard contract?

The Sacramento Kings have a couple of standard roster spots still available, and Jonathan Mogbo is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing candidates to fill one.

During a recent episode of Sactown Sports’ The Drive Guys, Kevin Gleason and Allen Stiles debated whether the former 31st overall pick should be promoted from his current two-way contract before the start of the regular season.

While Sacramento isn’t under pressure to make an immediate decision, both hosts believe Mogbo has done enough to warrant serious consideration.

The 6-foot-8 forward signed a two-way deal with Sacramento this summer after spending last season with the Toronto Raptors organization.

In four Las Vegas Summer League games, Mogbo averaged 11.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks while shooting 44 percent from the floor, showcasing the versatility that made him an intriguing prospect entering the NBA.

“Being able to guard multiple positions, I feel like I take pride in that. Any time I get a chance to step on the court, it’s defense first.”

Gleason wondered if the Sacramento Kings should use one of their final standard contracts on Mogbo while opening another two-way spot for Summer League standout Marquel Sutton.

Sutton, an LSU product, averaged 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game on 51/39/80 shooting splits over eight Summer League appearances (California Classic and Las Vegas).

“Wouldn’t you like to see Mobo get one of the regular roster spots, and then your guy Sutton get one of the two-ways?” Gleason asked.

Stiles didn’t hesitate.

“I definitely would,” Stiles said.

Beyond Mogbo’s individual production, Stiles believes Sacramento’s roster construction is finally starting to establish a clear identity.

“You’d have Maxime Reynaud, Dylan Cardwell, Mobo, Sutton, Precious Achiuwa,” Stiles said. “This would be the biggest Kings team we’ve seen in a very, very, very long time.”

That size and athleticism could become increasingly valuable over the course of an 82-game season, especially for a team operating under financial constraints.

Keeping Mogbo on a two-way contract allows Sacramento flexibility, but it also comes with the limitation that two-way players can only appear in 50 NBA games before requiring a standard contract.

Gleason also pointed to what he believes is a changing philosophy under general manager Scott Perry.

“It looks like they have players who play a certain way now,” Gleason said. “It looks like they are establishing a way to play… and I think Jonathan Mobo was a perfect fit for that.”

Stiles agreed, describing Mogbo as another high-energy frontcourt player capable of impacting games without needing the ball.

“He is another kind of Precious-esque type of player,” Stiles said. “He’s an effort and energy guy, and you can never have too many of those.”

The Kings recently waived two-way guard Isaiah Stevens, creating an opening on one of their three two-way contracts. Sacramento now has the flexibility to either keep Mogbo on a two-way deal or reward his strong Summer League showing with a promotion to the standard roster.

With training camp still ahead, Mogbo will have every opportunity to prove he’s worthy of making that jump.
