Doug Christie’s job security depends on more than the Sacramento Kings’ results.
The organization’s history with coaches, owner Vivek Ranadive’s involvement, and the challenge of developing Darius Acuff Jr. all factor into what comes next, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick.
Amick joined Sactown Sports’ The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross to discuss his Kings reporting. He said there has been league chatter about Christie’s position, but his understanding is that Sacramento is not looking to make an in-season change right now.
“I think Doug is good for quite some time,” Amick said, while adding that an extended losing streak or a frustrated owner could change the situation quickly.
He described the preference as “pretty strong” to avoid a midseason coaching change, but cautioned that “the human part” can be unpredictable if emotions run high behind the scenes.

The question of who might replace Doug Christie also comes with a larger concern: how the Kings’ reputation affects their next coaching search.
Amick said candidates and their representatives will consider Ranadive’s track record and how the organization handled former coaches Michael Malone, Mike Brown and Dave Joerger.
“Coaches obviously talk,” Amick said. He added that the handling of Christie’s promotion and contract could also come into play. For an established coach with options, that history may make Sacramento a harder sell.
Amick said general manager Scott Perry could help bridge that gap if he remains in charge of the front office.
Perry has strong relationships around the league, Amick said, and Ranadive had agreed to let him run the team. That structure could give candidates more confidence in who will make basketball decisions, though Amick noted Doug Christie’s elevation was heavily influenced by Ranadive.
Acuff’s development adds another layer. Amick described the rookie as a potential franchise building block, but said Sacramento needs to create a positive, productive environment around him. That means choosing a coach who can help Acuff grow and avoiding another rapid series of coaching changes.
“You don’t want to have that be the end all, be all,” Amick said of relying on Acuff alone. “You need to provide a good, positive, productive, developmental environment around him.”

Amick pointed to the Kings’ history of putting young players through multiple coaching changes, noting DeMarcus Cousins as an example.
Even if Christie is not the perfect long-term coach for Acuff, Amick said, Sacramento must weigh that against the cost of changing direction again.
For now, Amick’s reporting suggests Doug Christie has time, with injuries to key players–like Ben Simmons and Keegan Murray–and the broader state of the roster part of the evaluation.
But the organization’s next decision will matter beyond this season: it will help determine whether Sacramento can attract a new coach, keep Perry’s authority clear and give Acuff the stable development environment he needs.
