Draft Analyst on why Darryn Peterson has slipped to 4th in his Mock Draft

Bobby Gerould of HoopObsession joined Sactown Sports’ The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross to break down the latest 2026 NBA Draft projections, and he offered a surprising update on Kansas star guard Darryn Peterson.

While Peterson had been considered a potential top-three pick–and for most of this season, the top-overall pick–Gerould now has him ranked fourth on his draft board, citing defensive concerns and limited playmaking as key factors.

“Physically, people love him, and highlights show incredible athleticism—dunks, three-pointers, the whole package,” Gerould said.

“But if you study his game, his defense hasn’t been great this year, and he doesn’t do much as far as sharing the basketball. He has an equal number of assists and turnovers this season. That’s something teams have to weigh when projecting him to the next level.”

With Kansas’ 2025-26 campaign coming to a close last week against St. John’s in the round of 32, Darryn Peterson finished off a freshman season that saw him average 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals on 44/38/81 shooting splits.

Gerould’s discussion also compared Peterson to Arkansas’ Darius Acuff Jr., who, despite some defensive lapses, has shown the ability to carry his team.

Gerould noted that Acuff’s combination of scoring and playmaking gives him a clear edge in being viewed as an “alpha” player. In contrast, Peterson hasn’t consistently demonstrated the same capacity to lead a team offensively.

“I just didn’t see enough of him carrying a team in a way that makes me comfortable putting him in the top three right now,” Gerould added.

Gerould emphasized that Darryn Peterson’s ranking isn’t final as we move within three months of the 2026 NBA Draft.

“There’s plenty of time between now and the draft to adjust,” he said. “Being fourth isn’t the end of the world, and he still has the tools to be a star. But right now, if you’re drafting by who can contribute immediately at a high level, he’s just a step behind some of the other top prospects.”

He also praised Peterson’s raw talent, noting that when you watch his highlights, it’s clear he can perform spectacular athletic feats reminiscent of past NBA stars. However, Gerould warned that scouts must separate athleticism from impact.

“There’s a difference between highlight ability and being a true alpha scorer in the NBA,” he said.

As the 2026 NBA Draft approaches, teams will weigh Darryn Peterson’s potential against his current limitations. While his ceiling remains high, Gerould’s assessment suggests that cautious evaluation could keep him just outside the very top picks—at least for now.
