Where the Sacramento Kings roster stands following the Jalen McDaniels trade

The Sacramento Kings raised a few eyebrows on Monday when the news broke that they had traded forward Jalen McDaniels and a second-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs.

San Antonio will waive McDaniels upon the completion of the trade, making it clear that Sacramento’s goal was to clear a roster spot (check) and provide itself with more financial flexibility to make more potential moves down the line (also check).

By trading McDaniels and bringing no returning salary back to general manager Monte McNair’s cap sheet, the Kings are now just under $6 million under the luxury tax, providing them with some flexibility if they take on a larger salary in a potential future deal.

Sacramento could look to bring in a current free agent forward to fill one or both of the open spots, as they previously worked out veteran wing Jae Crowder earlier in the offseason. The Kings could also fill one roster spot with players in camp who are currently vying for a role like Terry Taylor or Boogie Ellis, then leave the other open to maintain flexibility–something that McNair has done in previous seasons.

It’s clear that the current Sacramento Kings roster is guard-heavy, especially with Trey Lyles (groin) and Orlando Robinson (knee) currently rehabbing injuries.

With just over one week remaining until the regular season tips off on October 24th, McNair and company will surely look to address Sacramento’s thin frontcourt before games begin to count.

When is the next Sacramento Kings game?

Sacramento will head into its final week of preseason with two games—both on the road—remaining on its exhibition schedule.

The Kings will head to Salt Lake City for a matchup against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night.
