Former Kings forward Rudy Gay announces retirement from NBA

Following an 18-year career, Rudy Gay announced his retirement from the NBA on Tuesday.

The veteran forward announced the news in a self-written piece published by The Player’s Tribune titled “If You Followed My Career, I’d Love For You to Read This.”

“Eighteen years in the league. Learned from some of the best to ever do it. Made some incredible lifelong friends. Feeling good. Healthy. Inspired. Have a family that loves me, and who I love more than anything,” Gay said in his announcement. “I’m not just OK. It’s like…. I’m the luckiest man in the world.”

I’m 38 years old.

I’ve had an 18 year career in the NBA.

Over a 17-season career with stops in Memphis, Toronto, Sacramento, San Antonio, and Utah, the 6’8 forward averaged 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists on 45 percent shooting from the field and 34 percent from three-point range.

Gay logged 1,120 games during his career, the 71st-most in NBA history.

After being traded to the Kings in 2013, Gay posted averages of 19.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals over four seasons (2013-17).

When is the next Sacramento Kings game?

Sacramento will hit the road for a four-game road trip that will begin on Tuesday night, where the Kings will face the Utah Jazz on the second night of a back-to-back at the Delta Center.

Utah will also be playing its second game in as many days after facing the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night.
