Should the Sacramento Kings target Obi Toppin in free agency?

Obi Toppin had a career year with the Indiana Pacers this season. Should the Sacramento Kings attempt to sign him in free agency?

The Sacramento Kings are expected to be active this offseason as they look to upgrade a roster that fell one win short of making the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

While it’s tough to pinpoint a singular move that can lift the Kings from Play-In territory to a perineal postseason contender, rounding out the roster and rotation will be a priority for general manager Monte McNair.

During this week’s action on Stiles & Watkins with Allen Stiles and Chris Watkins, the guys highlighted Indiana Pacers forward Obi Toppin, who will enter restricted free agency at the end of this month (June 30th) when the NBA’s free agent negotiating window opens.

Toppin, 26, set career highs across the board in 2023-24, most notably in points per game (10.3), rebounds per game (3.9), field goal percentage (57%), and three-point field goal percentage (40%).

Although the Kings already have two stretch forwards on the roster, could they look to extend an offer sheet to Toppin as they seek trades elsewhere that could send one or both of Trey Lyles and Sasha Vezenkov to new situations?

Topics Discussed: Obi Toppin

  • What is Toppin’s ceiling as an NBA player?
  • Is signing Toppin a better option than trading assets for Kyle Kuzma?
  • “His athleticism is definitely the thing that sticks out… He’s got the tools to be a good defender.”
  • Should Sacramento kick the tires on extending a contract offer to Toppin?
  • Would Toppin be a starter or bench piece?
  • Toppin’s playoff experience would exceed most players on the Kings’ roster
  • Can Toppin play the small forward position?
  • If Sacramento signs Toppin, would Trey Lyles slide over to the backup five?
