Aaron Fentress, Portland Trail Blazers beat reporter for The Oregonian, joined The Drive Guys this Monday to discuss a recent report that forward Jerami Grant would require first-round picks to be acquired in any trade.

Fentress seemed to be unsure of the likelihood that a deal of that sort could get done.

“I don’t know who’s giving up two firsts for Jerami,” he said. “It’s one of those things… what you want and what you get are two different things.”

As he points out, when Portland initially acquired Jerami Grant themselves, it cost them just one first-rounder. Now, with a few more years on his body and a $132-million four-year contract left to be fulfilled (including a player option in 2027-28), the asking price of multiple firsts may be too high.

From the Sacramento Kings’ perspective, there is a clear need for improved wing/forward play. It’s about picking the right player, though.

Adding another extensive salary could significantly limit their future flexibility in their current financial situation. So, if they were to make a move for Jerami Grant, they would need to have the utmost confidence it would elevate them into the top tier of the muddled Western Conference.

The dog days of the NBA offseason have arrived.

Sacramento will continue to look to add to its roster before players report for training camp at the end of September. The Kings currently have two open roster spots that general manager Monte McNair will have to fill in the coming weeks and months.
