Trey Lyles eyeing spot on Canada men’s Olympics Basketball roster

The 2023-24 NBA season is nearing the finish line as the Boston Celtics look to secure the franchise’s 18th title on Friday night in Dallas.

As we look to the offseason, this summer will look different for some players as they hope to suit up for their home countries in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

According to Mark Jones, NBC Sports California’s play-by-play broadcaster for the Sacramento Kings, forward Trey Lyles will be in training camp for the Canadian men’s basketball team as he looks to secure a spot on the 12-man roster.

Lyles could be playing for a familiar face in Paris as former Kings associate head coach Jordi Fernández is slated to experience his first Olympic Games as head coach of Team Canada.

Fernández, who was hired to be the next head coach of the Brooklyn Nets following Sacramento’s elimination from Playoff contention, replaced Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse last Summer, where he led Canada to its first Olympic berth since 2000.

Lyles, 28, just put the finishing touches on another solid season for the Kings.

Over 58 games, the 6’9 forward averaged 7.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range.

The veteran will have plenty of competition in camp to make the Canadian team, as several NBA talents will look to secure spots on Fernández’s roster.

MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander highlights a talent pool that also includes Dillon Brooks, Kelly Olynyk, RJ Barrett, Lu Dort, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dwight Powell, Jamal Murray, Andrew Wiggins, and soon-to-be NBA Draft pick Zach Edey.

Lyles could provide Canada with depth at the forward spots, one that can stretch the floor and bring physicality to a roster that is expected to possess plenty of talent.

The 2024 Olympic Games are set to begin on Friday, July 26th in Paris, France, with Basketball tipping off on Saturday, July 27th.

When is the next NBA off-season date of interest?

The NBA Draft is now a two-night event.

Wednesday, June 26th, will act as the first night of the 2024 NBA Draft, where the Sacramento Kings will make their first-round selection (13th). The second round of the draft will be held on Thursday, June 27th, where the Kings will use its 45th overall pick.

Sacramento hasn’t had a first-round pick since 2022, when it selected Iowa product Keegan Murray with the fourth overall pick.
