Sacramento Kings exercise 2026-27 team option on Devin Carter

Although the start to his NBA career has gotten off to a slow start, the Sacramento Kings want to take an even longer look at Devin Carter.

Sacramento announced this week that they have exercised the third-year option on Carter, the 13th overall pick from the 2024 NBA Draft, meaning the guard is under contract for the next two seasons (through the 2026-27 campaign).

Carter, 23, missed the first half of his rookie season due to recovering from a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Upon returning, the Providence product averaged 3.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 37 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc.

Although he was drafted by former general manager Monte McNair, current Kings GM Scott Perry has made it clear that Sacramento is looking for players that match Carter’s skillset–a pesky on-ball defender with elite speed and athleticism.

Carter’s largest area of improvement at the NBA level is his shotmaking and creating ability, but Sacramento has committed to two more seasons of work with last year’s lottery pick.

During this year’s NBA Summer League play in Las Vegas, Carter posted averages of 14.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, although his shooting splits (40/28/59) were a downside to his performance over six games.

The Kings, who are currently thin at the point guard spot, have only Dennis Schroder as the only true point guard on the roster. Carter, Malik Monk, and Keon Ellis are all options to set up the offense with the second unit, although all of those players are better suited in the two-spot or playing off-ball.
