Western Conference Standings Update: Where the Kings stand entering March

The Western Conference standings are always a neck-and-neck race, but this season’s push for the postseason will feature a photo finish for several teams.

As they move into a brutal stage of their regular season schedule, the Sacramento Kings (30-28) are fresh off of back-to-back blowout wins over lowly opponents–the Charlotte Hornets and Utah Jazz–in the league standings.

Sacramento needs every win it can get right now, and wins are about to be a lot harder to come by as the Kings begin a 13-game stretch that features matchups against Houston, Denver, New York, Memphis, Cleveland, Boston, Milwaukee, and Oklahoma City.

Here’s an updated look at where the Kings currently stand in the race for a third-consecutive postseason berth (Playoffs in 2022-23 and Play-In appearance in 2023-24):

Western Conference Standings

If the Kings want to avoid an early exit from postseason play, they will want to prevent a tenth-place finish in the Western Conference standings.

Since the NBA implemented its current Play-In format, no tenth-seed team has ever made an appearance in the NBA Playoffs (0-8). A ninth-seed finish improves Sacramento’s chances, as three of eight ninth-seeds have advanced to the Playoffs since 2021.

Eighth-seed teams have an about 50/50 chance of advancing to the Playoffs, while every seventh-seed team in Play-In history has made it to the first round (8-0).

With 24 games remaining, the Kings are just two games behind the sixth-seed Los Angeles Clippers. Sacramento will face Los Angeles twice more this season—once on the road (March 9th) and once at home (April 11th).

After suffering an ugly loss to the Golden State Warriors last week, the Kings will have one last shot at redemption as they look to secure the regular season series on March 13th in San Francisco.

Of course, before facing the Warriors, Sacramento has a huge game ahead of them this Monday night in Dallas–a team they trail by just one game in the standings. The Kings have already secured the regular season series over the Mavericks (2-0).

When is the next Sacramento Kings game?

Sacramento will continue a four-game road trip on Saturday night in Houston. There, they will look to complete a three-game regular season series sweep of their Western Conference counterparts.

On January 16th, the Kings delivered a 132-127 win over the Rockets at Golden 1 Center behind 33 points from DeMar DeRozan and 26 points from Malik Monk.
