Steve Kerr plans for 2024 Paris Olympics to be his last as Team USA head coach

After a disappointing FIBA World Cup appearance, Team USA basketball has high hopes heading into the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and a roster to go with it led by Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, for now. A slew of NBA stars have proclaimed their intentions to participate in recent months: LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, and Devin Booker.

Kerr recently shared with The Athletic that this will be his last run as head coach. Could one of his recent assistants step down the line? Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat filled the bench with LA Clippers’ Tryonn Lue and Gonzaga’s Mark Few.

“No,” Kerr said bluntly when asked if he would coach Team USA after the Paris Games. “To me, it’s a two-year; it’s a cycle. Pop coached a World Cup and the Olympics, now it’s my turn to pass the baton. I think that’s kind of how it should be. Frankly, it’s a huge commitment too. I guess I think it was different the last go-around with Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski) and Jerry (Colangelo), when they were really establishing this culture and this system where guys had to commit for a couple years. Made sense for Coach K to stay on. But I think where we are now, one cycle and you move on.”

Steve Kerr has been a member of Team USA basketball for decades, spanning back to playing for the 1986 team. After a disappointing showing in the FIBA World Cup, the expectations of a stacked roster and last hoorah for Kerr add to this summer’s storyline in Paris.

With many of the league’s stars from the past decade in the back nine of their career, it may be more than Kerr’s final showing.
