Sacramento State made headlines on Monday as ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news that former NFL QB Michael Vick was in discussions to become the head coach of the school’s football program.
Shortly following the report, Sacramento State released a statement that addressed the notion that Vick was being hired to be the school’s next head coach:

Dr. Luke Wood, president of Sacramento State, also took to social media to confirm the report, stating that he did meet with Vick. Wood added that announcements on “several major decisions” are coming soon.
The news of Vick’s interest in the role coincides with reports that the Pro Bowler has also met with Norfolk State about their head coaching vacancies. This partnership makes sense, seeing that Vick is a Virginia native who attended both high school and college in the Old Dominion.
Negotiations between Sacramento State and Vick–among others–appear to be ongoing as the Hornets aim to fill the void left behind by Andy Thompson as the school continues to push towards making the jump from the FCS to the FBS.
More on Sacramento State & Michael Vick
After moving on from Andy Thompson, Sacramento State football may have found its new head coach. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, “Sacramento State is in discussions to hire former Pro-Bowl QB Mike Vick as its new head coach.”
Schefter also reported that “Sacramento state plans to move up to FBS,” referencing their upwards of $50 million in NIL money.
With recent reports connecting Michael Vick to Norfolk state, Schefter says the former Pro-Bowler “already has told The Virginian-Pilot that he has spoken with Norfolk State officials about that job.”
There’s a lack of clarity in these reports. Still, Sacramento State football seems willing to invest in bringing in ideal talent to improve upon their 11-14 record from last season while aiming to move conferences.
