Sacramento State football coach Andy Thompson steps down from position

Sacramento State football head coach Andy Thompson has stepped down, according to a release issued by the team on Friday morning.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Thompson, who has been with the Hornets’ football program since the 2019 season, is joining his predecessor, Troy Taylor, at Stanford.

Taylor and Thompson will reunite just two seasons after leading Sac State to a 12-1 record and an appearance in the FCS Playoff quarterfinals.

Thompson’s Hornets and Taylor’s Cardinal team finished the 2024 season with records of 3-9.

Sacramento State Athletics announced today that head football coach Andy Thompson has resigned to pursue other career opportunities. A national search will begin immediately to find the next head coach for the Hornets.

“We want to thank Coach Thompson and his family for all they have done for Sacramento State football over the last five seasons,” Director of Athletics Mark Orr said. “Under his watch, the program has achieved its highest level of success. We wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Thompson joined the Sacramento State staff as the defensive coordinator prior to the 2019 season and played a large role in the team winning Big Sky Conference titles in 2019, 2021 and 2022. He coached George Obinna, Josiah Erickson, Marte Mapu, Armon Bailey and Cameron Broussard to FCS All-America honors during his tenure. Mapu also became only the second Hornet to be named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year and was drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots.

Thompson was elevated to head coach following the 2022 season and guided the Hornets into the second round the 2023 FCS Playoffs a year ago. He exits Sacramento State with a career record of 11-14.
