Tim Plough explains why UC Davis is focused on consistency, not results

UC Davis football head coach Tim Plough says the Aggies aren't giving up their goal of making the postseason, but it will take a sprint to the finish.

A team that can’t play two good weeks in a row has an obvious problem. What UC Davis coach Tim Plough described on a recent radio visit was a quieter one: how to lead people through a season that isn’t going the way anyone planned.

Plough called it a frustrating year, and he named the cause plainly. His Aggies, he said, have followed good performances with poor ones, which isn’t something the program is used to.

The diagnosis was specific. Defensively, Plough said, the team has struggled to get off the field on third down. Offensively, it has been in the red zone in its last two road games and come away without points.

The bigger worry is the pattern. “I don’t think we’ve done back to back good weeks all year,” he said, so the first challenge is playing well this Saturday, and the second is doing it again the week after.

Asked how he copes, Plough described himself as the steady presence. He shows up Sunday to meet with the staff and Monday to meet with the team, win or lose, with the same approach every week.

Behind that routine is a philosophy he says he built through hard experience as a younger man.

“I don’t think joy comes from outcomes, it comes from transforming and becoming and changing into the best version of you,” Plough said.

That belief shapes what he loses sleep over, and it isn’t the standings.

“I worry about everybody else,” he said. “That’s probably what keeps me up at night.”

His concern is the emotional toll on his staff and players. His message to them is that today can still be the best day of their lives, and that Saturday could still be the best game of the season.

Plough isn’t ignoring the playoff picture. He wouldn’t say Davis controls its own destiny, but he believes eight wins is a strong résumé, and he said winning the next three to finish 8-4 would give the team a great shot.

He also knows the selection process has limits. With so much parity in a weird season, he said, it could come down to several teams in the same bracket, and “it kind of becomes a beauty contest.”

That’s where Rex Connors comes in. Plough said the defender practiced in full pads for the first time in about a year and a half, and the whole practice took off. He called Connors arguably the greatest defensive player in UC Davis’ history and said his return would help the team’s case with the selectors.

But Plough said thinking about the bracket can pull focus from the only thing in his control: playing well.

He closed with his own thesis and a promise: “The Ags are gonna play really well this weekend, mark my words.”
