Donte Whitner, a former NFL player and current NBC Sports Bay Area analyst, joined Sactown Sports Tuesday to talk about Niners with Kyle Draper and Jay Johnson.

In 11 NFL seasons, the former safety made two Pro Bowls and was named to the 2006 NFL All-Rookie team. So it’s safe to say, Whitner knows a thing or two about defense. So when asked about current 49ers’ safety Talanoa Hufanga, Whitner only had high praise for the third-year player.

“This is a guy who was all Pac-12 two consecutive years, he was up for the Thorpe Award, and you implement him in a 49ers defense that are high pressure, he’s going to have success. So I expect him to keep ascending until eventually he becomes the top safety in the NFL,” Whitner said.

Additional topics discussed include:

  • Why fans shouldn’t be concerned about Sunday’s preseason game result.
  • Is there any concern with the 49ers defense after Sunday’s game?
  • What do veterans try to accomplish during the preseason?
  • Trey Lance is playing for his spot on the 49ers roster
  • What stops the San Francisco 49ers from winning the Super Bowl this year?
  • Which teams are the biggest threats in the NFC West to the 49ers?
  • Thoughts on what’s happening in college football
