Report: Bill Belichick turned down offer to join 49ers coaching staff

It’s been an interesting offseason for the San Francisco 49ers.
During his opening press conference at Tuesday’s training camp, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed to reporters that the team extended an offer to former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick in hopes that the future Hall of Famer would join the staff.
Belichick turned down the offer as the 72-year-old will enter the season without a head coaching job for the first time since 1999.

“I did, I threw it out to him,” Shanahan responded when asked if he extended an offer to Belichick. “He loves football so much that you never know.”
Shanahan also said that Belichick’s role with San Francisco would have been open to the legendary coach’s desire.
“I know he just loves ball in its simplest form, so I threw it all out to him, whatever he wanted to do,” Shanahan said.
After missing out on the Atlanta Falcons head coach opening, Shanahan said he was hopeful that Belichick would join the staff as the team’s defensive coordinator following the exit of Steve Wilks following the heart-breaking Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 49ers promoted Nick Sorenson to the defensive coordinator role on March 2nd.
