The 2024 San Francisco 49ers continue to be hindered by injuries, particularly in the running back room. After losing Christian McCaffrey, Jordan Mason, and Elijah Mitchell throughout the year, rookie Isaac Guerendo got the starting spot against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
Unfortunately, Guerendo was sidelined with a foot injury in the second half, leaving him unavailable for the last couple of drives down the field in San Francisco’s 38-13 blowout victory.
Before that moment, he had racked up an impressive showing with 78 cards on 15 carries, 50 receiving yards, and a pair of touchdowns. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan provided a minor update on the rookie’s status Monday afternoon.
The 49ers plan to “evaluate him over the next few days, to see if he has a shot” to play in their next showing. The short week, with a looming Thursday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams next on the schedule, provides an atypical week of practice and recovery, but never say never.
Shanahan said Geurendo definitely couldn’t have practiced today and said he’d be surprised if he can practice tomorrow. Patrick Taylor Jr. will start Thursday if Guerendo can’t play. https://t.co/hGKb9xk777

After Guerendo, the Niners remaining (healthy) backs are Partick Taylor Jr., Ke’Shawn Vaugh, and Israel Abanikanda. Shanahan said that Taylor Jr. would start against the Rams should they need to.
San Francisco seems to find a way to get meaningful production from nearly any running back, but their slew of injuries has been an unideal wrinkle contributing to their up-and-down season.
Sitting at 6-7, with an upcoming division matchup against the Rams (7-6), they still have a chance to make the postseason. That should be their primary focus.
More on the San Francisco 49ers
Brock Purdy passed for 325 yards and two touchdowns, Isaac Guerendo ran for two scores, and Leonard Floyd registered two sacks against his former team as the host San Francisco 49ers routed the skidding Chicago Bears 38-13 on Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif.
San Francisco (6-7) stopped a three-game losing streak while remaining in the hunt in the NFC wild-card race.
Chicago lost its seventh in a row, stumbling through its first game under interim coach Thomas Brown, who took the reins after the organization fired third-year coach Matt Eberflus on Nov. 29. The Bears (4-9) were outgained 452-162.
The 49ers reached the end zone on three of their first four possessions and scored on four of their five first-half drives overall, excluding their kneel-down on the final play.
