Roster cut-down day also had a bit of injury news for the 49ers, both good and bad.
First the good: The San Francisco 49ers announced that safety Talanoa Hufanga has made the 53-man roster, removed from the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday. After being cleared to practice almost two weeks ago, the 49ers will now look to ease “Huf” back into the fold after a season-ending injury last season.
Hufanga, 25, is coming off a Week 11 ACL tear, unable to play football since. Before that, the versatile safety was a shining star for San Francisco, becoming an All-Pro in 2022. He has amassed 181 combined tackles, seven interceptions and 14 pass break-ups in 42 NFL games played.

More on Talanoa Hufanga & Elijah Mitchell
Unfortunately, not all injury news was good, as Elijah Mitchell is now done for 2024.
Mitchell, 26, has struggled to stay healthy the last few seasons, suffering multiple lower-body injuries. 2024 training camp was no different, missing parts of August due to a hamstring issue. He now heads to season-ending injured reserve, hoping to get fully healthy for 2025.
Additionally, linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been put on the PUP list, while defensive tackle Kalia Davis has been moved to IR with a designation to return this season.
All transactions Tuesday are only initial, with more moves by the 49ers expected over the coming days and weeks.
Here’s the #49ers initial 53-man roster:
QB (3): Brock Purdy, Brandon Allen, Josh Dobbs
RB (4): Christian McCaffrey, Jordan Mason, Patrick Taylor Jr., Isaac Guerendo
FB (1): Kyle Juszczyk
TE (2): George Kittle, Jake Tonges
WR (7): Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings,…— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) August 27, 2024
