Taylor Wirth, reporter for NBC Sports Bay Area, joined The Drive Guys on Tuesday to discuss the recent comments from Brandon Aiyuk and if they should be concerning for the San Francisco 49ers’ ongoing negotiations as the 2024 NFL season approaches.
Aiyuk said the 49ers told him they did not want him back next season. From Wirth’s perspective, there’s no way that could be the case, and it’s likely centered around financials.
The trio also dove into the San Francisco Giants’ state relative to the rest of the MLB and what could happen between Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors this offseason. Could it be the end of Thompson, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green’s era in the Bay Area?
More on Brandon Aiyuk
Aiyuk is set to make $14 million in 2024 to complete his rookie deal. He is seeking a hefty extension, reportedly for at least $30 million annually.
Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings), A.J. Brown (Philadelphia Eagles) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions) have all earned contracts this offseason worth $30 million-plus per year.
Multiple media outlets reported earlier this month that Aiyuk’s negotiations with the 49ers were not progressing well.
As part of his holdout, Aiyuk didn’t participate in the 49ers’ offseason program and skipped the team’s mandatory minicamp. The latter absence could result in a fine of more than $100,000.
The 26-year-old is coming off a year in which he caught 75 passes for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. In 62 NFL games (60 starts), he has 269 receptions for 3,931 yards and 25 TDs.
