JT O’Sullivan, former NFL, and UC Davis quarterback, joined Stiles and Watkins on Thursday to discuss the early play of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
As host of The QB School YouTube channel, where he breaks down quarterback performances from around the league weekly, JT O’Sullivan has tremendous insight into Purdy’s specific strengths and weaknesses.
After their week two game, Purdy complimented Minnesota’s defensive coordinator Brian Flores and their schemes. When Stiles and Watkins asked, JT O’Sullivan said, “It is a very unique scheme at the league level. It’s kind of interesting if you pull back and kind of see how Brian Flores has evolved defensively from his time in New England and his team as a head coach in Miami.”
“I think there was a gap year for him when he was in Pittsburgh,” he continued. “And, in Pittsburgh, the story about how the defense evolved was, as he’s coaching with the Steelers, they share a building with Pitt, and (Pat) Narduzzi, the head coach there, is famous for this kind of cover zero.”
Clearly, some of those non-tradition NFL defensive looks impacted Purdy in their loss to the Vikings. With him in line for a big payday this offseason, is there much more for him to prove at this point?
JT O’Sullivan thinks that we may not get the chance to see him prove more under Kyle Shannahan’s offensive scheme and the elite playmaking options on that end, which The QB School host refers to as ‘The Avengers.”
“What Brock (Purdy) has done, in my mind, is kind of elevate that unit,” he said. “And that’s kind of the measure for me with a quarterback. When he is in there, that unit, those players, play better.”
