The 49ers’ O-Line could determine Christian McCaffrey’s ceiling

The San Francisco 49ers have plenty of familiar pieces on offense, but one of the biggest questions entering the regular season is how all of those pieces will fit together.

Senior NFL writer Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News recently joined Sactown Sports’ The Drive Guys to discuss the 49ers’ offense, Christian McCaffrey, and the concerns surrounding San Francisco’s interior offensive line.

Iyer believes the biggest challenge for the 49ers is getting their offense to look like the cohesive unit it has been in previous seasons.

“I think that’s the thing: is do they seem a little bit put together? Are things crisp?” Iyer said. “I think it’s still a work in progress, but we know this team can get going and get on a tear at any point.”

That cohesion will be particularly important for McCaffrey.

The star running back remains one of the most important pieces of Kyle Shanahan’s offense, but Iyer believes San Francisco’s interior offensive line could make it more difficult to consistently establish the running game.

“There was a concern a little bit in terms of running the ball,” Iyer said. “The efficiency and average yards per carry weren’t there. You couldn’t necessarily pound McCaffrey and get that production you were looking for from that aspect of the running game.”

That could become even more problematic in the NFC West, where San Francisco will regularly face talented defensive fronts.

The 49ers may therefore need to find creative ways to take pressure off their offensive line. Iyer pointed to the passing game as a potential solution, particularly given the additions and weapons available to Brock Purdy.

“I think their offensive efficiency is going to have to be manufactured a bit by, hey, we need to stretch the field better,” Iyer said.

The idea is simple: If San Francisco can consistently force defenses to defend the entire field, it could prevent opponents from simply crowding the middle and attacking the 49ers’ interior blocking.

“You open up the running game that way,” Iyer said, adding that McCaffrey can remain heavily involved as a pass catcher while the offense looks for ways to create more space.

Iyer doesn’t believe the 49ers necessarily need to abandon what has made their offense successful. Instead, they may have to be creative enough to compensate for a potential weakness up front.

“I think they did the best they could to mask that last year,” Iyer said. “I think they might have to be just as creative this year.”
