Arik Armstead receives Sacramento key to the city

Several members of the San Francisco 49ers organization took time Thursday night to break away from OTAs and support Arik Armstead at his Kick Off For Kids 2023 Gala.

Trey Lance, Jauan Jennings, team owner Dr. John York and former 49er Patrick Willis attended the black-tie event, which serves as a fundraising event for the defensive lineman’s nonprofit, the Armstead Academic Project. A three-time Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee by the 49ers, Armstead started his nonprofit in 2019 to help ensure education equity for all youth in his hometown of Sacramento and Northern California.

And just as the event was getting underway, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg surprised Armstead with a special gift from his hometown, the key to the city.

“Now some might ask, ‘Does it open the city treasury,’ the answer is no, but it opens the key to the city’s heart, and you have it and we’re grateful for you,” Steinberg said as he presented the key to Armstead.

The last person to receive a key to the city of Sacramento was Chance the Rapper in 2017 for a charity-based concert he held in the city.

Arik Armstead was selected with the 17th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the 49ers. In eight seasons with the Red & Gold, he’s registered 269 tackles, 28.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Injuries slowed him down in 2022, when he only started nine games.
