Commissioner Roger Goodell extended through 2027 by NFL owners

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is sticking around through 2027.

The league announced Wednesday a contract extension that keeps the 64-year-old commissioner around through March 2027. Goodell has been NFL commissioner since 2006 when he took over the role from Paul Tagliabue.

According to NFL.com, this is his fourth extension since taking over the role. His current contract was set to expire next year.

Goodell’s tenure has had its ups and downs. The league has seen an increase in popularity, with the Washington Commanders selling for a record-setting $6.05 billion in 2023. A year prior, the Denver Broncos sold for a then-record of $4.65 billion.

The lows, though, included the league’s handling of Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling call for social justice or dealing with off-field player issues, most famously, when former running back Ray Rice was suspended twice for punching his then-fiancée.
