ESPN reports 49ers sign quarterback Josh Johnson to fill backup role in San Francisco
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, San Francisco is signing backup quarterback Josh Johnson following the season-ending injury to Garoppolo.

A familiar face is returning to the San Francisco 49ers.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco is signing backup quarterback Josh Johnson. This move comes on the heels of Jimmy Garoppolo breaking his foot in Sunday’s win against the Miami Dolphins and ending his season.
A 13-year journeyman, Johnson has played for 14 different teams. The Oakland native first signed with the team in March 2012 but was cut in August. He again signed with the 49ers in May 2014 and was repeatedly cut and signed throughout the season. The last time the team kicked the tires on Johnson was in 2020.
Josh Johnson has only started nine games in his career, playing in 37 total.
49ers are signing QB Josh Johnson off the Broncos practice squad and on to their 53-man roster, per sources. During his 13 years in the NFL, Johnson has been a member of 14 different teams, the most for a player in league history. This will be his third stint with the 49ers.

Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy became very relevant Sunday when Garoppolo went down with an injury. The 262nd pick in this year’s NFL Draft ended his first professional game with 210 yards on 25-37 passing attempts, two touchdowns and one interception.
