Faithful Flashbacks #23: Frank Gore’s Rushing Record

In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called Faithful Flashbacks.

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Coming in at No. 23 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is Frank Gore becoming the 49ers’ all-time leading rusher.

Gore’s record-breaking moment came during the 2011 season, but the story was built over more than a decade. The 49ers drafted him in the third round in 2005, bringing him in after a college career at Miami that had already included major knee injuries. There was talent, but plenty of skepticism, which was the reason he wasn’t taken in the earlier rounds.

He quickly became one of the few steady parts of the franchise during a difficult stretch. They had few winning seasons throughout much of the 2000s as the offense went through different quarterbacks, coaches, and systems. Yet, it was Gore’s role that stayed consistent through most of it. He became the player San Francisco could build its running game around and one of the more reliable pieces on their roster.

His best statistical season came in 2006, when he rushed for 1,695 yards and made his first Pro Bowl. That year showed what he could be when the offense ran through him, but even when he wasn’t the highlight, he was just consistent enough at getting 3-5 yards on every single play. Gore continued producing through losing years, coaching changes, and eventually the team’s climb back into contention under Jim Harbaugh.

That made the record feel earned by the time it arrived. On Dec. 4, 2011, during a 26-0 win over the St. Louis Rams, Gore passed Joe Perry to become the leading rusher in 49ers history. It happened during a season that also marked the franchise’s return to the playoffs, tying Gore’s individual achievement to a larger team turnaround.

Gore remained a core piece throughout that run as well. He helped the 49ers reach three straight NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl during the Harbaugh era, providing the offense with a reliable base while the team relied on defense and a physical brand of football.

By the time his 49ers tenure ended after the 2014 season, Gore had rushed for 11,073 yards and 64 touchdowns with San Francisco. He left as the franchise’s all-time rushing leader and one of the most important players from the years between the dynasty era and the team’s return to contention.

The record itself deserved to make the cut on our countdown, but Gore’s place in 49ers history comes from the full decade behind it. He was there through the losing, stayed productive during the rebuild, and remained a major part of the team when San Francisco finally started winning again.
