In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Coming in at No. 43 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is Ronnie Lott’s famous pinky decision.

There are plenty of ways to explain what made Lott one of the defining players of the 49ers’ dynasty, but this story has always been one of the more well known. It’s extreme, maybe a little uncomfortable, but it also matches the reputation Lott built throughout his career.

Lott was viewed as more than just a talented defensive back. He was the tone-setter for one of the NFL’s greatest eras, arriving as a first-round pick in 1981 and immediately becoming part of a championship team. Over the next decade, he helped San Francisco win four Super Bowls while building a reputation as one of the hardest hitting and most respected defenders in league history.

The pinky story came out of the 1985 season, after Lott injured his left pinky while making a tackle. The injury left him with a choice to either go through a more involved surgery that could have risked him missing time or amputate part of the finger and be ready for the next season. Lott chose the amputation.

The decision is often referenced in 49ers history because it feels like the kind of thing people would make up to describe an old school football player. He had the tip of his finger removed and returned for the 1986 season, where he continued playing at an elite level.

Lott was one of the best defensive players in football, and he remained that way after the injury.

Looking back, even Lott has said he would have handled it differently, which adds a little more reality to a story that can sometimes get treated like a cartoon version of toughness. But from a 49ers perspective, it remains one of the most memorable examples of the edge Lott brought to the franchise.

It was not a touchdown, a playoff win or a championship-clinching moment. It was a decision that became part of the legend around one of the greatest players the 49ers have ever had.
