Faithful Flashbacks revisits Jeff Garcia’s 2001 season, when the 49ers rebounded from two losing years and returned to the playoffs.

In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Faithful Flashbacks -- San Francisco 49ers 80 Best Moments

Coming in at No. 51 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is Jeff Garcia leading the 49ers back to the playoffs in 2001.

At the start of the decade, Steve Young’s career had come to an end, Jerry Rice’s time in San Francisco was over, and the franchise was trying to avoid slipping too far from the standard it had built with those two and Joe Montana building a dynasty. After two losing seasons, the 2001 team was the one to bounce back.

Quarterback Jeff Garcia became one of the biggest reasons for that. While not on the caliber of Montana or Young, who was an unfair bar anyway, Garcia gave the 49ers a quarterback who could still keep the offense dangerous. He threw a career-high 32 touchdown passes that season and helped San Francisco regain some of its identity as a creative, productive offense.

Terrell Owens was already one of the league’s most dangerous receivers, allowing Garcia to have a high-end threat and a clear number one target to rely on. Garrison Hearst’s return also became one of the best stories of the season and was recently mentioned on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown as well.

With Garcia, Owens, and Hearst all playing major roles, San Francisco had enough firepower to look like a real postseason team again.

They finished 12-4 and earned a Wild Card spot, returning to the playoffs for the first time since 1998. Unfortunately, the run ended in Green Bay, where the Packers beat the 49ers in the opening round, but the larger point had already been made.

After two losing seasons and the end of an era, Garcia helped bring the 49ers back to relevance and help restored a sense that San Francisco could still in the postseason despite their dynasty being in the rearview.
