John Lynch addresses Trey Lance trade rumors, Nick Bosa contract negations

John Lynch and the 49ers are playing catchup.

On Wednesday, reports surfaced that Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers decided Sam Darnold would be the team’s backup to Brock Purdy this season, leaving Trey Lance in quarterback limbo.

After that news came out, the former third-overall pick was not seen at practice Wednesday. Later that same day, Shanahan told KNBR the team thought it was best for Lance to take the day off and process the news. Lance was back with the team on Thursday.

On Thursday, it was Lynch’s turn to talk.

Speaking with KNBR, Lynch addresses some of the rumors that have surfaced after yesterday’s news. Dianna Russini, senior NFL insider for The Athletic, reported that the 49ers have been shopping Lance for “much of the offseason.”

Lynch refuted that report, saying the most likely option is for Lance to stay with the team for the season.

“The most likely option is that he’s here. If we can find a landing spot for Trey that is a really good one for him and works for our organization, that’s not something that we’d turn a blind eye to. But that’s not where our focus is right now,” Lynch told KNBR.

Lynch added he didn’t think the news would get out, but added Lance handled the news, “incredibly well with class.”

What’s the latest on Nick Bosa?

While one player is back, another is still missing.

After Lynch discussed the Trey Lance situation, he broke down the latest on contract negotiations between defensive stud Nick Bosa and the team. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has been holding out of training camp until he gets a new contract.

“I don’t like the situation. Since our tenure here, we haven’t had a holdout to anywhere towards this magnitude. It’s not something I’m comfortable with,” Lynch told KNBR. “We’re working really hard to try to change that. We’re in good communication with his reps. He’s a special player, he’s going to get a special contract. I can tell you that. But we’re getting closer and eager to bring this thing to a close.”

Bosa’s rookie contract concludes at the end of the 2023 season.
