Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels sounded optimistic that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will return in Week 8.
Garoppolo suffered a back injury in Week 6 against the New England Patriots, leaving the game in the second quarter. He was later taken to a local hospital out of precautionary measures. Veteran Brian Hoyer filled in at QB in Week 7 against the Chicago Bears, throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns in the team’s 30-12 loss.
Talking to the media Thursday, McDaniels was asked if Jimmy Garoppolo could play Monday against the Detroit Lions.
“Hopeful. Yeah, as long we don’t have anything that goes the other way,” McDaniels said, adding the quarterback practiced Thursday. “We’re very hopeful that’ll be the case.”
McDaniels also provided an update on kicker Daniel Carlson, who played against Chicago with a pre-game injury. According to Sports Illustrated, the Raiders signed kicker James McCourt to the practice squad. If Carlson isn’t able to go Monday, McDaniels says they’ll be prepared.
“We’ll just see how Daniel is feeling as we go through the week and make the right decision at the end of the week here based on how that’s going, whether we need to do something else in terms of elevate him and all the rest of it,” McDaniels said.
