The Las Vegas Raiders are entering a new era, and according to The Athletic‘s Sam Warren, it’s one defined by something the franchise has lacked in recent years: direction.

Appearing on Sactown Sports’ The Matt & Kayla Show, Warren highlighted the growing sense that the Raiders finally have a cohesive plan, beginning with the selection of quarterback Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“It seems like they actually have a vision for once, and things are kind of on the same page,” Warren said. “There’s been so much turnover… but now it really feels like somebody is in charge.”

That “somebody” appears to be general manager John Spytek, working alongside head coach Klint Kubiak. Warren noted that this regime is reshaping the roster with intention—moving on from holdovers and bringing in players that fit their system.

The result? A roster that looks purpose-built for Mendoza’s development.

“Everything that the Raiders have done seems to suggest they’re rolling out the red carpet for Fernando Mendoza,” Warren explained. “They’re preparing for him, addressing the line, filling other areas—it just feels like they’re doing things that make sense.”

Beyond landing their franchise quarterback, the Raiders used their 10 draft picks to aggressively retool key areas—most notably the secondary.

“They completely revamped their defensive back group,” Warren said. “They needed playmakers, and they went out and got multiple guys with ball skills and versatility.”

While some needs—like wide receiver and defensive tackle—weren’t addressed early, Warren believes the Raiders are confident in their current personnel and offseason additions.

That confidence extends to their offensive weapons, including tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, who could serve as early safety valves for Mendoza.

As for Mendoza himself, Warren pointed to maturity and leadership as early reasons for optimism.

“He’s really humble and driven,” Warren said. “He doesn’t feel like he’s walking in with the keys to the franchise already handed to him. He wants to prove it.”

The overall energy around the Raiders reflects that mindset. After a turbulent 2025 season, Warren described the current atmosphere as optimistic—but measured.

“The vibes are high,” he said. “But there’s still a lot of work to do.”
