With free agency about a month away, quarterback Derek Carr is getting out in front of his pack this weekend.

Reports emerged Friday that the former Raiders gunslinger is taking a trip to the Big Apple this weekend to visit with the New York Jets. This is Carr’s second visit to an NFL team this offseason, previously visiting the New Orleans Saints.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo was the first to report the news.

Carr has been an unofficial free agent since Week 17 of the 2022 regular season after Las Vegas decided to bench him for the season’s final two games. The Raiders tried to trade the veteran QB, most recently having a framework deal in place with the Saints. Wanting to assess his options fully, Carr activated his no-trade clause, signaling he would not be accepting a trade to any team at this time.

The Raiders released him a few days later, saving $40 million of the salary cap over the next two seasons.

In a statement, Raider’s coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler said they have a lot of respect for Carr and what he did for the franchise.

“Derek has done great things in this league and we’re thankful to have been able to work with him this past year,” McDaniels and Ziegler said. “He is a true professional and we appreciate his hard work in striving to produce the results we all desire. We wish Derek and his family all the best in the future.”

The Raiders drafted Derek Carr in 2014, starting 142 games for the Silver and Black. Over his nine years as the team’s starter, he threw for a franchise-leading 35,222 passing yards and finished with 62-78 record. He took the Raiders to the postseason twice, most recently in the 2021 season.
