Can Mike Evans put the 49ers over the top in 2026?

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner explains how Mike Evans and an unexpectedly strong defense are raising the 49ers’ ceiling after their win over Seattle.

Mike Evans gave the 49ers something they had been missing: a receiver Brock Purdy could trust to win a one-on-one matchup when the game was on the line.

That was ESPN’s Nick Wagoner’s biggest takeaway from San Francisco’s win over Seattle, which pushed the 49ers to 5-0. Evans helped keep the winning drive alive with a series of catches before Purdy found Brandon Cooks for the touchdown.

“Is Mike Evans the piece that does finally put the 49ers over the top?” Wagoner said on Sactown Sports’ Matt & Kayla. “It’s too early to say, but it sure looks like he could be.”

Wagoner pointed to the 49ers’ need for a receiver who can make a play against man coverage, and the star wide receiver has delivered so far.

Over five games, Evans has caught 24 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns, while picking up 22 first downs, just one shy of the 23 he racked up over eight games in 2025.

Purdy’s back-shoulder throw to Mike Evans down the sideline was a big-time play, Wagoner said, but the quarterback also needed to trust that Evans would come down with it.

“The Niners have that boundary X receiver who, if all things aren’t working otherwise, they could throw it to Mike Evans and know that they have a chance to move the ball down the field and score touchdowns,” Wagoner said.

The defense has been another reason San Francisco’s ceiling looks higher than expected. Wagoner said the unit was supposed to be closer to the middle of the pack, but Raheem Morris has helped the 49ers get more out of their defensive backs and generate pressure even without a dominant front four.

Wagoner highlighted Renardo Green’s progress, Malik Mustapha’s development, and the consistency of Ji’Ayir Brown and Deommodore Lenoir. The 49ers also had five sacks against Seattle, with five different players getting one.

“If that defense is top 10, what if both of those things are in the top 10?” Wagoner said. “That raises the ceiling of who you can be.”

Dre Greenlaw’s one-game suspension, which followed his sideline incident with Seattle, was upheld on appeal. Wagoner said Greenlaw’s history may have worked against him, but he also understands why the linebacker’s fiery style is part of what makes him effective.

The 49ers will miss Greenlaw, especially against a mobile quarterback, but Wagoner said the team doesn’t want to change who he is. His edge has value, even if it sometimes comes with consequences.

With Mike Evans creating a new answer against man coverage and Morris’ defense producing beyond expectations, San Francisco has more ways to win than it did entering the season.

Wagoner said the team’s challenge now is to keep building on that start and avoid letting early success turn into complacency.
