San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy got his first extended look at a different defense this week as the team prepares for Thursday’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans.
Purdy said Tuesday’s work against Tennessee provided a valuable change of pace after spending much of the offseason and training camp facing his own teammates.
“I think just going up against a different scheme,” Purdy said. “It was nice to switch it up, go against those guys and their ones and feeling the physicality, the violence from just another team.”
The quarterback was encouraged by the offense’s ability to move the ball, particularly with several pass-catchers making plays. Deebo Samuel Sr., De’Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson all stood out during the practice.
Purdy was especially excited about Robinson, who he believes could have a bigger role in San Francisco’s offense this season.
“He’s one of the best receivers that I’ve played with in terms of the one-on-one matchup and his feel for the game,” Purdy said. “He’s played for a while. He’s got a lot of savviness to him.”

Purdy added that Robinson’s strong training camp has convinced him the veteran receiver deserves more opportunities.
While the quarterback was pleased with what he saw, he also identified areas that need improvement. Facing a new defense reminded Purdy that he needs to remain aggressive and decisive with his reads.
“That’s something that I’ll watch the film and see where I was at today, but those are just my initial thoughts,” he said.
Purdy also discussed his progress with the fundamentals he emphasized throughout the offseason, particularly his footwork and pocket presence.
“I think just playing with urgency with my feet, having a good base,” Purdy said. “I feel like if I can just continue to do that, I can continue to take my game to the next level.”
Another significant development for Purdy has been taking on more of a leadership role with head coach Kyle Shanahan away from the team.

Purdy said he has looked for opportunities to use his voice, hold teammates accountable, and keep the offense moving.
“I feel like I’ve had to take that step this year with that and it’s been good,” Purdy said.
As for Thursday’s preseason opener, Purdy indicated that he expects to discuss his playing time with the coaching staff but acknowledged the value of getting live-game reps.
“I do think it’s big just in terms of getting a feel for an NFL game,” Purdy said. “That’s what we’ve done in the past. We haven’t really talked about anything yet. I’m sure we will soon, but I guess we’ll see.”
