The San Francisco 49ers are facing another injury concern early in training camp, as wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was held out of practice Wednesday due to swelling in the same knee that sidelined him for much of the 2025 season.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the swelling is related to the PCL injury Pearsall suffered last year, with the 49ers saying he is currently being evaluated.

The team added that “all options” are being explored and acknowledged there is some concern surrounding the lingering issue.

The development is significant for a player who was expected to take on a larger role in San Francisco’s passing attack this season.

More on 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall

Ricky Pearsall originally suffered the PCL tear during the 49ers’ Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2025. At the time of the injury, he was off to the best start of his young NFL career, totaling 16 receptions for 281 yards through four games.

The injury forced him to miss eight regular-season contests before eventually returning later in the year.

Although he made it back onto the field, Pearsall never quite regained the explosiveness he displayed before the injury. He finished the 2025 campaign with 36 catches for 528 receiving yards and failed to record a touchdown while also dealing with a minor hamstring issue during the season.

His rookie campaign in 2024 showed flashes of promise as well.

Pearsall appeared in 11 games, catching three touchdown passes while totaling 400 receiving yards. Across his first two NFL seasons, the former first-round pick has demonstrated the ability to stretch the field when healthy, but injuries have prevented him from consistently building momentum.

Now, the lingering effects of the PCL injury have resurfaced in the form of chronic knee swelling, creating uncertainty as training camp gets underway.

Reports indicate the 49ers are evaluating every possible treatment option, including the possibility of surgery if necessary to eliminate the recurring irritation.

If Pearsall is forced to miss significant time, San Francisco has additional talent at wide receiver. Veteran star Mike Evans headlines the position group, while rookie De’Zhaun Stribling, the No. 33 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, has generated early buzz during camp.

For now, the 49ers will hope Ricky Pearsall’s latest setback proves to be temporary.

However, with the regular season approaching, the team’s medical evaluations over the coming days could determine whether the talented receiver can finally put the lingering knee issue behind him.
