49ers Activate CB Jason Verrett from PUP List

Some more secondary depth is on the way for San Francisco.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Wednesday that the team has activated cornerback Jason Verrett from the PUP list, making him eligible to debut for the team this season. Verrett has been on the injured reserve for more than a year now, recovering from a torn ACL sustained Week 1 of last season. Practicing the last few weeks, head coach Kyle Shanahan did not rule him out for this week’s trip to face the Los Angeles Rams.

“I mean, I’m not ruling out this week. I’m really just waiting to see how he practices and then go from there,” Shanahan said Wednesday.

Getting the limited designation to open the week, his return seems more likely to come after the team’s bye in Week 9. They will face the Los Angeles Chargers at home in Week 10.

Jason Verrett, 33, has been injury-plagued the last few years, only appearing in one contest three out of the last four seasons. When healthy he is still a capable cover man, registering seven pass break-ups, two interceptions, and 60 combined tackles in 2020.

The move is a necessary one for the 49ers, not activating him by the deadline Wednesday would mean that he was ineligible for the remainder of the 2022 season.
