49ers announce contract extensions for Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch

It appears the current 49ers’ brass is sticking around for the foreseeable future, with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch getting new deals to end the work week.

The San Francisco 49ers announced the multi-year contract extensions for both men Friday, keeping the tandem together for the next few seasons. The team did not specify as to how many years the extensions were, nor if there was any monetary increase in salary for both men.

According to reports, however, John Lynch is signed through the 2024 season, while Kyle Shanahan will stay on through 2025.

Both men joined the 49ers’ organization in February of 2017, turning the fortunes of the historic franchise around after a few rough years. Since then, San Francisco has made the postseason three times, claiming two NFC West divisional titles in the process (2019 & 2022).

Since 2019, the Red & Gold have won 45 games, tied for fourth-most in the NFL. The duo have a team record of 55-46 in the regular season, while going 6-3 in the playoffs.

“Lynch has been vigilant in acquiring players who embody the team’s culture on the field and in the community since arriving in San Francisco,” the press release stated.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety has been instrumental in adding top-tier talent to the roster, including the likes of All-Pros DL Nick Bosa, TE George Kittle, S Talanoa Hufanga, WR Deebo Samuel and LB Fred Warner to name a few. Lynch has also been active in free agency and the trade market, picking up RB Christian McCaffrey and DL Javon Hargrave most recently.

Shanahan has been the mastermind behind the offense, producing a powerhouse unit over the last few years. San Francisco has averaged 367.3 net yards per game, the fifth-most in the NFL since 2017. Despite adversity due to injuries, the head coach has churned out winning squads, most recently going 13-3 last season.

He has also been vital in the development of QB Brock Purdy, scheming an offense designed for the young gunslinger to thrive in. Getting off to a 3-0 start to the 2023 NFL season, Shanahan has his team primed for another deep run into the postseason.

After some speculation over the future of both men staying with the 49ers past 2023, those rumors can officially be put to bed.
