49ers begin cutdown process amidst mounting injuries
The 49ers began trimming their roster to 53 men over the weekend, releasing a handful of players on both offense and defense.

When the 49ers wrapped up their 2023 preseason Friday, the clock started on the countdown to the regular season.
With that comes roster cutdown day, having to trim 90 men to 53 by Tuesday afternoon. And while a lot of tough decisions have already been made, San Francisco has numerous more to make over the next 24 hours.
The 49ers began their cutdown process Sunday, releasing five players from the depth chart. Those include: Cornerback Nate Brooks, defensive linemen La’Darius Hamilton, Breeland Speaks and Spencer Waege, and linebacker Kyahva Tezino. The Red & Gold also released DL Taco Charlton from the injured reserve, along with an injury settlement.

Those five cuts have brought the 49ers roster total to 85 players at the moment, a long way to before reaching 53.
San Francisco faces even tougher decisions this year, due to the amount of injuries the depth chart has already suffered. Friday’s preseason finale saw the 49ers lose a number of key players, including both kickers Jake Moody (quad) and Zane Gonzalez (hamstring), before the contest. The team also lost rookie tight end Cameron Latu to a meniscus injury that will require surgery.
Despite having to make drastic cuts over the next 24 hours, many players could find themselves on the IR to avoid waivers.
“Yeah, it all affects it. Also, Latu with his thing that came up also. It all plays into each other. So stuff we’re not ready to decide yet, but it’ll all play into the factor of the 53,” coach Kyle Shanahan stated Saturday. “We know the positions we want, we know the numbers that we need. We’ve got to see who’s available. Some of these guys that are hurt, like [WR] Ray-Ray [McCloud III], Danny Gray, now Cam. We’re just going to have to see how long it is and whether to think about IR or whatever it is for the 53.”
One player that hasn’t reported to 49ers HQ, Star pass rusher Nick Bosa, will likely not be on the 53-man roster come Tuesday. Stuck in lingering contract disputes, Bosa would be placed on the reserve/ did not report list until the two sides agree to a new deal.
While there is less than two weeks to go until Week 1 of the regular season, the 49ers remain confident that Bosa will be back in the building in the near future.

“Yeah, I do,” general manger John Lynch said about Bosa being there Week 1. “We’ve got a lot of work to do and we’ll continue to do that. He’s a great player. We want him here. We need him here.”
