The San Francisco 49ers head into their bye week after their first loss of the season, with Christian McCaffrey’s hamstring and a string of costly mistakes among the topics Kyle Shanahan addressed with reporters.

McCaffrey sustained a mild hamstring strain in the game, Shanahan said, adding that it was not a thigh injury. Asked whether McCaffrey could be ready after the bye, Shanahan was cautiously hopeful: “We’re pretty optimistic about it. So is he.”

Several injured players could also return when San Francisco resumes play, though Shanahan said none are guaranteed.

Nick Bosa, Mike Evans, Luke Gifford, Deebo Samuel, Marques Sigle, Garret Wallow, Demarcus Robinson and C.J. West all have a chance to come back, pending a week of rehab and evaluations.

Shanahan said De’Zhaun Stribling remains on track for a possible return in December. Sam Okuayinonu, whose recovery is expected to take longer, is still tentatively targeting January.

The coach pointed to four turnovers and a defensive offsides penalty as pivotal errors in the loss. The 49ers lost two fumbles to punch-outs, threw two interceptions and gave Atlanta another opportunity after stopping it on fourth down.

“When you have four turnovers to zero, it’s really hard to win in this league,” Shanahan said. He took responsibility for one of the interceptions, saying Brock Purdy needed to throw the ball away on an off-schedule play rather than leave it near safety Jessie Bates III.

Shanahan said the decision to go for it on fourth-and-10 after Jordan Watkins’ touchdown was overturned had nothing to do with kicker Eddy Piñeiro.

The 49ers were down by two touchdowns, and Shanahan believed they needed to score twice.

With the trade deadline approaching, San Francisco will continue evaluating potential additions. Shanahan identified receiver and defensive line as the team’s obvious injury concerns, while noting that players returning from injury affect roster space.

“If there’s stuff that makes sense that can improve our team in any spot, we’d love for that to happen,” he said.

The team will have the rest of the week away from players after a final workout and meeting, then reconvene Monday. Shanahan said he expects cornerback Upton Stout, who has been managing a shoulder issue, to be full-go when the team returns.
