49ers Deebo Samuel responds to Newton, Parsons comments

Deebo Samuel was quick to respond to harsh comments about Brock Purdy, calling out the critics during an interview Wednesday.

The San Francisco 49ers have had to eat a lot of crow the last 48 hours, with Deebo Samuel coming to the defense of his quarterback, Brock Purdy.

The 49ers wide receiver made his weekly appearance on Up & Adams Wednesday. During the segment, Samuel was asked about the criticism from former NFL QB Cam Newton, particularly surrounding Purdy. This isn’t the first time 49ers players have had to defend themselves from Newton, calling Purdy a “game manager” a few weeks back.

This time, however, was different, with Samuel calling out the former QB for flipping sides when things got rough.

“First of all stop texting my phone, Cam Newton. You were a fan like two weeks ago. That’s mad crazy. You wanted me on your podcast after talking about my quarterback, which is funny to me,” Deebo Samuel said to Kay Adams Wednesday.

The wideout was then asked about Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and his comments recently.

Parsons has been vocal on his podcast, The Edge, about both Purdy and Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, saying he could do the same job in the 49ers’ system. Samuel didn’t take kindly to that, speaking on the matter Wednesday.

“Like bro, we beat you [42-10], like whatever the score may be, like a long time ago. I don’t get why he’s so bothered by what we got going on over here,” Deebo Samuel said about Parsons. “I don’t understand like you saying you can be a quarterback in this offense, like I don’t understand where you’re going with that.”

Deebo Samuel does understand why the 49ers are getting criticized though: Because of the legacy of the franchise.

The 49ers are one of the most storied franchises in football, with both haters and supporters in drives around the world. When the team is on a big win streak, the former is silent. But when the Red & Gold have an off night, everyone is quick to slander the perennial playoff contenders.

“It’s the Niners, it’s the effect that we have on everybody,” Samuel stated. “I feel like nobody wants to see us win. They’re all quick to point fingers when things don’t go the way they supposed to go, when everybody thinks that and knows we’re still the best team in the league. It’s just crazy how much they try to bring [Brock Purdy] down. I mean, the guys still threw for 255 [yards].

“It’s the NFL, it’s gonna happen and you can’t control how tipped balls flying 25-30 feet in the air and just giving guys opportunity to catch it.”
