49ers GM John Lynch Confirms Team is Planning Contract Extensions For Key Players

Well, Jimmy Garoppolo is here to stay. At least for now.
After the 49ers announced this week they had reached a restructured deal with the veteran to stay on as a backup, many were left speculating what that actually means for the 2022 49ers quarterback room.
To put it simply: Trey Lance is the starting QB for the 49ers this season.
“That’s why Trey is our starting quarterback,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday. “That’s why Jimmy wasn’t an option unless he came in as a backup role…this doesn’t change anything and I just feel it makes us a much better team and doesn’t hurt our cap like it would’ve.”
Whether you agree with the decision to keep Jimmy G or not, the 49ers’ play-caller is right about one thing, his contract is much more attainable now than it was at the start of the week.
Going from almost $25 million to a mere $6.5 gives the 49ers a reported $13 million in cap space. That’s enough money to start the process of contract extensions as a number of key players are entering the final year or two of their deals.
“We’re talking to a few players. We’ll try to pursue that and see if makes sense for us and for them,” GM John Lynch said Thursday. “We’re always trying to lock up good players.”
The number one priority for San Francisco should be the extension of All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa. He’s entering the final year of his rookie deal. The 49ers already exercised his fifth-year option, scheduled to make $18 million in 2023 if both parties cannot come to terms on a new deal before then.
Other projected starters entering the final year of their contracts are linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair; safety Jimmie Ward; right tackle Mike McGlinchey; cornerback Emmanuel Moseley; defensive ends Samson Ebukam, Jordan Willis and Charles Omenihu, center Jake Brendel; and, kicker Robbie Gould.
The front office is feeling great about their chances this season, and for years to come, if they can lock down those key areas.
“I’m confident in this roster as a whole,” Lynch said.
